Attention span: 4/10 EXTREMELY repetitive Controls: 9/10 Some might say they are too fast Implementation: 5/10 Needs upgrades and better graphics Overall: 6/10 A somewhat poor clone of Spaze 83
Invaders is more or less a clone of the popular Spaze Invaders for the TI-83. However, I do not believe that it gives Spaze Invaders justice. It is missing a lot of features such as difficulty level and bosses. For those of you have not played Spaze Invaders, the game is of a shoot'em up genre. The set-up is kind of like Phoenix 89, where you are one ship that has to kill wave upon wave of the enemy. You have four barricades that you can hide behind that absorb enemy fire until they are eroded away. The point of the game is to destroy all of the alien ships before they reach the bottom of the screen and "land." It sounds hard, but it is really quite easy. You have four lives to begin with, and you get an extra life at increments of 2500, 5000, 10000 (etc.) points. There are four types of enemies, worth different amounts of points.
If I were to sum this game up into one word, it would be repetitive. You see, the same wave of enemies just repeats itself over and over again with no bosses to break the flow. You just keep playing the same level indefinitely (There may be a point where you beat the game, but I have not had the patience to make it past wave 7). The author claims that "Each wave of enemies is faster and has more fire power than the last." Even if this is true, the difference is so negligible that it really does not add any considerable value to the gameplay.
The graphics are not so hot considering that this game uses the same sprites that the 83 version does. No grayscale or anything either. The animation is OK. Your ship moves smoothly, but the enemies move in a choppy sort of motion across the screen. I think they would be better suited to move smoothly.
The controls are what you would expect, 2nd to fire and the arrow buttons to move sideways. Some might say that the ship moves a little too fast, but it really is not that bad.
I said this about Solar Striker, and now I am saying it about FInvaders; there needs to be an upgrade system. There also needs to be some variation in the enemies. There are only FOUR different types, whereas Phoenix has around fifteen different types. Also (and this is obvious when you first play the game), there needs to be a considerable increase in variation and difficulty between each level. Otherwise, there is really no fun or challenge to the game. It was a good thought to make a clone of Spaze Invaders, but this game just does not cut it when compared to Phoenix and Solar Striker. |
