Attention span: 9/10 I seem to recall an old commercial for Tetris which made use of the word
Controls: 7/10 A little bit difficult, but not enough to ruin the game.
Implementation: 8/10 I honestly can't think of anything else that could have been done for this game on the 83. (It still uses only about 3000 bytes even as it is.)
Overall: 9/10 It's Tetris. What more do you want?

By this time, Tetris is one of the most widely recognized video games on the planet, I'm fairly sure. In fact, a recent study showed that more Americans from ages 5 to 85 can draw perfect likenesses of the 7 Tetris blocks ("Tetrads") than can draw perfect likenesses of the 9 justices of the Supreme Court. Of course, this study occured only in my own brain, so it might not be an accurate representation of the American population (981001161410f all statistics are made up on the spot), but it is true that this is a fairly popular game.

ZTetris should not be a disappointment to the legions of Tetris fanatics out there. The levels and heights of the classic versions are preserved, and the classic Tetris gameplay is maintained. The high score list allows you to carry on a continual high score contest between yourself and that pretty girl next to you in your Algebra class (which is another reason why this game is cool; that same girl would probably never talk to a calculator geek like you if you didn't have Tetris on your calculator).

Unfortunately, due to the low resolution of the 83 screen, the blocks are all solid black and are indistinguishable apart from their shape. When you place them, they blend together into a rectangular blob at the bottom of the screen, which is unfortunate, as seeing the patterns the different blocks form as they build up has always been one thing that I enjoy watching in Tetris.

Play control is a little bit unusual. The blocks drop a little too slow on the lower levels, even when you hold down the Down key, and it's sometimes difficult to tell exactly when the current block has landed; I've sometimes knocked a block out of alignment with the perfect position that would score me a Tetris because I thought control had passed to the next block. It also seems that the blocks don't turn the way you'd expect them to, but that might just be me. (This game does let you use both 2nd and Alpha to turn the blocks both right and left, which helps a good deal in getting the bonus points for quick placement of blocks.)

The starkness of the blocks is somewhat offset by the backgrounds outside the playing field, which change each level and provide a good background for the gameplay. If you love Tetris, which a whole lot of people seem to, you'll probably play this game for hours on end.
