“iShell” is a shell for the Ti-86 that works very well for organizing data, password protection and security, and hiding files. However, it has one major problem on my calculator: it crashes too much and sometimes this results in losing programs. It may not be a good choice to use as shell for your 86 for this reason, but you should at least try it out.

This is, in my opinion, the best shell for the 86. As the description says, it has just about anything anyone could want from a shell-renamable folders (which are useful for those like me who have >50 programs), an in-program option menu (good for closing frozen programs, or to change the contrast without exiting), and the best part-external file types. This means that if you embed the proper headers in a file-editing program, when you try to run your saved files from iShell, the editor will be opened, with the file loaded. This makes it very easy to view pictures and TextView files quickly. The battery level monitor is useful-no waiting for the "Low Battery" home screen message to appear. It's also small, at ~4 KB.

The only features I think should be added are file renaming (like File Manager) and folder info write back (so that you wouldn't have to move all the programs back to the correct folders after restoring the memory).

Altogether, even if you don't have a lot of programs, you should at least try this shell.
